Public Participation, an interview with Shane Jolley
February 15, 2007
In the process of getting things started here at theOwen I have had a number of great conversations about the potential of this resource to connect the community and to inspire more active participation on the part of local citizens in local matters. A good number of those conversations have taken place with Shane Jolley.
The thing is, if you weren’t there while we were chatting it up at the shop, or the Farmers market, or on the street downtown how do you add your two cents to the conversation. You didn’t even know it had happened.
Herein lies one of the goals I have for theOwen. Share conversations. In our otherwise busy lives it can be difficult to keep up with all that is happening in the community around us. I intend to try and solve that to a certain extent. By posting audio and video of some of the great conversations and events I am a part of you can take part too. I might also add that you can take part when it’s convenient for you which is pretty cool if you ask me!
You can also participate. Eventually a number of opportunities to provide feedback will be opened up here at theOwen. In the meantime I encourage you to add a comment to this post (look for the comment link below!) and add your thoughts. It’s that easy to participate.
And now for more on participation I invite you into my living room for a discussion on public participation with Shane Jolley
You can listen to the interview with the player below or you can download the show(right click save as).

Thanks for this effort, Ryan! I’m new to the area and very interested in discussions about community like this. One suggestion on the format: When it’s an audio piece, I’d love to know in advance how long the clip is so I can block time to listen. A request: My mailing address is Owen Sound, but I actually live in Georgian Bluffs (municipally speaking). I’d like to see info about issues that go beyond city limits, find out how Owen Sound council actions affect fringe areas.

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree with posting the length of audio segments. It’s something I have been doing on other projects. I’ll go back and add running time to the existing audio!
As far as info about how OS council actions affects fringe areas… I would also like to see this discussion evolve. I will see what I can do to help it along. If you or anyone else has thoughts or would like to help make the discussion evolve then feel free to contact me.

Maybe you could have a tab that could work like the old K106 bit where people would randomly call in and give a weather update from their kitchen window– sort of a “what’s happening” window on the local region…
What’s the easiest way to be alerted when new comments are posted?

I’m hoping that this message reaches Shane Jolley.
This winter I proposed a somewhat similar on-line forum for Huron County and through the Huron Community Matters office, I’ve been informed that you will be down here May 30th and 31st. I’d very much like to meet you and talk with you during that time. I’d even attend your workshop if you would advise me of the times that would best facilitate the possibility of a conversation on the importance of an on-line approach to encouraging transparency in the process of having citizens identify aspects of their lives that are not yet economically, socially or environmentally sustainable—in order to effectively and transparently communicate to planners, politicians and people in municipal, provincial and federal leadership roles.
