Public Participation, an interview with Shane Jolley

February 15, 2007

In the process of getting things started here at theOwen I have had a number of great conversations about the potential of this resource to connect the community and to inspire more active participation on the part of local citizens in local matters. A good number of those conversations have taken place with Shane Jolley. shane jolleyThe thing is, if you weren’t there while we were chatting it up at the shop, or the Farmers market, or on the street downtown how do you add your two cents to the conversation. You didn’t even know it had happened.

Herein lies one of the goals I have for theOwen. Share conversations. In our otherwise busy lives it can be difficult to keep up with all that is happening in the community around us. I intend to try and solve that to a certain extent. By posting audio and video of some of the great conversations and events I am a part of you can take part too. I might also add that you can take part when it’s convenient for you which is pretty cool if you ask me!

You can also participate. Eventually a number of opportunities to provide feedback will be opened up here at theOwen. In the meantime I encourage you to add a comment to this post (look for the comment link below!) and add your thoughts. It’s that easy to participate.

Preparing for final approach

February 5, 2007

I have been thinking a lot lately about this idea… After listening to a podcast discussing the ability of 747 and other large aircraft to land in no visibility conditions. An amazing feat really. That said it isn’t exactly luck or coincidence that the plane can find its mark on the tarmac. In order for the plane to accomplish this task it must have a very good (read exact) comprehension of where it is at before it begins final approach.

What are we approaching? and how are we doing it?

I think the plane makes for an interesting metaphor / analogy? of the situation that many communities, bug and small face in a regular basis. What is in the future, both in terms of that of record (see cultural, heritage, development plans etc) and that which is still unknown, This place for example had little idea of the existence of this space (the site you are currently reading and that we hope we make interesting enough for you to come back) and I think it has a significant ability to influence the course of action taken in this community.

I guess the point to be considered then is that we never really know where we’re going but we do know where we’ve been and where we are at now. We do know where we are at no right? Lets consider that one for a second.

Social justice.
