The Undesirables Rock Mudtown!

June 4, 2007

The UndesirablesIt must have been the music. Where else could Corin Raymond and Sean Cotton of The Undesirables have found the energy they needed to perform as intensely as they did after the day they had just worked? The roots duo was at their down & out but still lovin’ it best after a long day of traveling and performing. They left Toronto at 8:30 Sunday morning to be a part of the Georgian Bay Folk Society event, “Finding Your Musical Self: the Road to Summerfolk” which was held from noon ’til five at the old Courthouse, and then they traveled down the road to Mudtown Pottery to throw an acoustic show that started at eight. Maybe the frisbee game on the Mudtown lawn helped them recoup some energy.

They described the “Finding Your Musical Self” event as a great success with nine musicians between the ages of 13-20 taking part in a round table discussion of musical creation and performance. They commented several times during their show how impressed and inspired they were to see the kids sharing their music and discovering how fun that can be. They also commented on how envious they were that there is support in this community for kids that want to make music and regretted that nothing of the sort existed during their youth in Georgetown. So once again, way to go Grey-Bruce, and kudos to the Georgian Bay Folk Society for running a youth program!

The UndesirablesTheir show was masterful, as it has been every time this faithful correspondent has seen them. Corin Raymond’s songs rang with the soul of a street poet who cries with every all-night diner that closes its doors while Sean Cotton filled the space with ragtime old-timey honeysuckle riffs on his acoustic guitar. Their voices soared together and the smiles they shared as they sang were an unguarded revelation of just how much these two love to make music together.

Mudtown CrowdThey are obviously well-loved in these parts. Last year’s Summerfolk appearance has really fired the area up for The Undesirables. They felt like Simon & Garfunkle as the audience recognized and applauded for songs before they had really begun. The songs from their soon-to-be-released album “Doghouse Dreams” dispelled any fear of them falling into the sophomore slump, with “Night Train” being your friendly correspondent’s personal favorite.

After the show Corin and Sean were kind enough to give Ryan and I ten minutes to record a discussion on how the Discovering Your Musical Self event had gone and how the Undesirables have been progressing. You can give it a listen by clicking on the audio link below.(11 min.37 sec)

A big thanks out to Anne Finlay-Stewart for organizing and promoting the show, to Kate Mclaren for the use of the space at Mudtown Pottery, and to The Undesirables, Corin Raymond and Sean Cotton for giving us some of their time for an interview and of course for putting on such a mesmerizing show. And last but not least, thanks to all the folks who came out and supported live music in Owen Sound. You justified Anne Finlay-Stewart’s risk in bringing the boys to town, and you helped guarantee that there will be many more events of this sort.

I’ll add that there were two additional events promoted last night, Jim Ansell is bringing Ray Liota to Mudtown on June 10th and there are a few events planned over the summer by Susan and Irwin @ Knox Acoustic Cafe. Of course all these events and more great music can be found in theOwen.com Music Events calendar.

[…] Seriously, if you have never seen this duo perform you really should. I have had the opportunity to see them perform at least 4 times in the last 6 months and if I might have to stop by the show on the 27th even though there are other things happening. The most recently I saw the guys perform at Hugh’s Room in Toronto last Friday night. They returned the day before from a series of shows in the UK and they still put on a powerful, theatrical show. If you want to find out a little more about the Undesirables you can here our interview with them here. […]
