First Ever Bike Cruise a Great Success!

July 11, 2007

Bike Cruise ParticipantsOn Monday July 9th Owen Sound witnessed it’s first ever Bike Cruise! A beautiful rag-tag crew of devoted riders of bikes answered the call put out by organizers Jonathan Cox and Shawna Banville through hand-crafted posters tacked to downtown bulletin boards. Rest assured, next time theOwen.com will post a digital version of the poster along with plenty of advance notice so that all you hip bike enthusiasts can crawl out of the woodwork, get on your bikes & join us! And there will be a next time; Shawna and Jonathan are planning to repeat the event on the 2nd Monday of every month from now until all the bikes in the world lock up with rust!

Cruiser's PicnicOur team of raggamuffin bikers met near the government boat launch at the northern end of the Bayshore Community Centre parking lot, biked south through town to Harrison Park where we stopped for an hour’s picnic complete with roasted red peppers, goats cheese and fantastic rye bread. Then the posse got back on the bikes for a tour through the fitness trail and on to Jazzmyn’s Tapas and Taps. The kind people at Jazzmyn’s were sweet enough to stay open just a little later just for our party of 14. Here the cruiser team celebrated Shawna’s birthday in style. The ride was amazing good times and though not overtly political the message was clear that these riders prefer their bikes to cars.

Funky CruisersThe riders came out on all sorts of bikes. Some on fun-ctional mountain bikes and road bikes, some on ancient funky rides that had been recycled and brought back to life. Some wore costumes, some had baskets full of flowers on their handlebars, many used clothes pins to clip old baseball cards to their frames so that the passing spokes created a clicking sound that many will remember from their childhood. What a great time! We’re putting the call out to all the funky bike enthusiasts in town: Join us on the 2nd Monday of each month for a super-chillin’ bike cruise! We’ll be meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the boat launch on the north end of the Bayshore Community Centre parking lot with smiles, costumes and picnic baskets laden with good good food. Thanks Shawna & Jonathan for organizing thw whole event, & happy belated birthday Shawna!
