Art in the Garden @ Keppel Croft
July 12, 2007
This post was provided to us by Eleanor Pauling who contacted us with news of the event. If you have an event you would like promoted at theOwen.com just contact us with your information!

Art in the Garden will be held at Keppel Croft on Saturday, July 14th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the thirteenth annual celebration of a day when our artistic friends and neighbours gather at Keppel Croft Gardens to display and sell their creations.
Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for those 12 years and younger. Visitors are invited to put their names in for a lucky draw. The prize? A Bed and Breakfast stay at Keppel Croft Farm and Gardens.
Art in the Garden had its beginnings when jeweller, Sandy Goss met us in a grocery store in winter thirteen years ago. From that conversation in the soup section came the idea for Art in the Garden. Quite a number of our friends and neighbours have participated each year and this summer we look forward to another great day.
Visitors are offered the opportunity to talk with all the artists and craftsmen and the chance to enjoy and purchase their creations. There will be:
There’s also a variety of perennials and shrubs to purchase from local nurseries as well as maple syrup locally harvested by Bob and Mary Beth Gray from Kemble. Hammered Dulcimer music will be provided by Paul Haslem on the patio. The gardens, of course, were another work of art on display! Once more, this July there will be more than thirty artists taking part in this summer event.
Steve Irvine was one of the original participants in our very first Art in the Garden. Steve’s beautiful pottery is one of the highlights of the day. He produces functional stoneware with lively colourful surfaces that reflect his wide experimentation with glazes.
Rob and Sue Thomas present an astonishing variety of wrought iron sculptures at Art in the Garden. They even bring the first truckload the day before Art in the Garden day and set up under the old apple trees by the circle garden. Rob uses found farm materials in some of his work. Last year his work included fountains, sculpture for the garden and stands for potted plants.
Sabine Hammel will be bringing yarns made from locally produced wool that is washed, carded, spun and dyed at Lindenhof Wool Mill, her family’s speciality mill. There will also be brightly coloured knitted socks and hats as well as knitting kits that make great gifts.
Joyce Harpell from Ottawa will exhibit her photographs that reflect her fascination with the world of flowers. Joyce is a first time exhibitor at Art in the Garden this year. Chris Piekney is another new participant this year. She brings her stained glass pieces from her home near Big Bay. Jeff Suchak from London is another first time participant. Jeff will have his remarkable nature photographs.
Mette Baker is another friend from Ottawa. Mette also delights in Nature, capturing the outdoor worlds of Denmark and Canada in her work. Mette exhibits and sells her paintings internationally.
Jane Macintosh will come from Little Britain near Lake Scugog with her pottery. Jane’s work is deeply influenced by classical Oriental philosophies of life and art. Jane has spent many hours studying and practicing the timeless art of Oriental brush drawing and has trained with several masters of the ancient art form.
Georgia Helleiner gathers leaves, seedheads and flowers from some of the most unlikely places and creates one of a kind cards with the dried materials. She is most willing to explain the process she uses to create her delicate presentations. Georgia had a very successful, sold out showing in Toronto this spring.
Tony and Donna Pasman have been displaying their basket weaving in the same part of the garden since they first joined in Art in the Garden years ago. They are enthusiastic demonstrators of the art. You will have a chance to meet the grandchildren who help their parents with their display of photographs.
At the end of the day when the visitors have all left and everything is sorted out and packed away, we hold a pot luck dinner in the garden with our friends and neighbours, volunteers and artists, who participated in Art in the Garden. We make the draw for the winner of the Gate Prize and enjoy phoning someone with that good news. And then we look forward to the next year’s Art in the Garden!
