Harbour Nights: Fun on a Sunday Evening!
July 19, 2007
~Enio Mascherin & James Dykeman
This town has a secret that only a few lucky people seem to be in on. It just so happened that I was at the Marine & Rail museum this Sunday past (ok, maybe the city hired me as the entertainment!) to be brought into the loop. So what’s the big secret? Well, it’s not technically a secret.
In fact, there are flyers all over town and theOwen.com has run several posts on the topic. And truth be told there were quite a few people attending the event. I guess I just found it to be such a nice place to be on a sunny Sunday evening that I was astounded the inner harbour wasn’t lined with people from tenth street to Kelso on the westside, and to at least the Bayshore Community centre on the east!
I am of course referring to the Harbour Nights concert series which is a free event happening on Sunday evenings between 7 and 9 p.m. On Sunday July 15th Joel Morelli and I shared the stage with two great local songwriters, James Dykeman and Enio Mascherin. James and Enio started the evening with there finely crafted original songs. Their songs showcased some very clever arrangements, tight harmonies and intelligent lyrics. They expressed their nervousness to me before starting the show, but their act was very professional. I hope that they keep on writing and playing their songs and that I have many more opportunities to see them perform.

As Joel Morelli and I took the stage the shadows cast by the Marine & Rail museum building had me wishing that just once the sun would set in the east. There’s nothing more satisfying than playing your tunes into a golden setting sun. I could tell by looking out at the crowd that they were loving the slanting evening sun in their faces and I wouldn’t have taken that from them for all the guitars in Fromager’s Music (either one of them!). My dear friend (and boss!) Ryan Wiseman happened to bring his little handheld recording device, so we are pleased to be able to present you with one of my original tracks recorded live from the Harbour Nights gig on Sunday July 15th. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we performers enjoyed playing!
Track 1: Lonesome Hitchhiker
As the sun sank the shadows grew, and Joel and I found our audience seeking warmer pastures. Let this be a word to the wise. Definitely come out to see the Harbour Nights shows, but remember your lawn chair, blankets and sweaters. Especially for next week as Dorit Chrysler and her mysterious Theremin are an act you really don’t want to miss a minute of! Visit our complete schedule of Harbour Nights events for more information about this amazing concert series. You can also visit the city’s website for further coverage of the Harbour Nights series and the Homecoming Meet & Greet tent concert series.
