The Passing of Bill Georgas

July 31, 2007

With the tragic passing of Bill Georgas the city has lost a truly remarkable man. Rollerblading, skiing, and winning triathlons well into his eighties, the man was an energetic dynamo. Nearly everyone in the Scenic City has a story to tell about him rollerblading into their backyard or seeing him in the lineup in the morning at Blue Mountain ski resort, and seeing him racing in to catch the last chairlift at the end of the day. The whole city feels his loss, and theOwen.com would like to express our sympathy to Bill’s friends and family.

Ryan Wiseman caught up with mayor Ruth Lovell this afternoon and spoke with her about the loss of a long-time neighbour and friend. We have the audio from the discussion here for you to listen to.

Bill was indeed a remarkable man– I used to run into him regularly on the old train tracks just north of the city on winter mornings. Whether we crossed paths, or if he was overtaking me in the same direction, he’d always stop for a quick chat. This is truly a great loss, but the inspiration he provided to the city and the region will doubtless continue in his absence.

I think it’s great what you guys have created here with theOwen.com; working abroad it keeps me current on what is happening at home, and makes me long to be back there.

Got something to say?
