Have a great long weekend
August 31, 2007
Just a quick audio post to lead you into the long weekend. There’s lots going on in the area and as always you can find something to keep yourself busy by checking out our events calendar or reading through the last few posts below. As the Long weekend leads us back to school and out of summer I would encourage you to take a moment to read My Last Day in the Office written by Adam, which provides few highlights from the summer and a hint at what’s ahead.
For my two cents it has been an absolutely fabulous summer (read hectic and crazy busy, but the good crazy busy of course). TheOwen has come a long, long way since early May when Adam came on board as a writer/editor. The contribution he has made to this site and the community it services has been too great to detail in this single post. In actuality it would likely take at least 128 posts (the number of articles Adam wrote this summer) and that doesn’t include the behind the yet to be published works and the time an commitment he put into our community events calendar among other things.
All right I’m now going to be late for dinner…
Adam, thanks a million for your great effort and creative touch here at theOwen this summer. I look forward to working with you again soon in the “virtual office”. Keep well my wandering friend…

My Last Day In the Office
August 29, 2007
Yes, sadly it is my last day in the office. I fly for Victoria on Friday morning to complete my undergraduate studies in English and Creative Writing at the University of Victoria. I am excited to be heading west again but of course sad to leave this beautiful and amazing little town. It has been an incredible summer for me, working with Ryan on theOwen.com, playing lots of music and getting out to see so many fantastic events being held in our area.
I’d really like to send out a thanks to Ryan Wiseman for offering me this position. It has been a dream job working on a project I believe in very strongly. This site we have developed is a very powerful concept. Taken to its full potential theOwen.com offers the people of this area a chance to share their knowledge and resources with one another, to inspire one another to be brighter, more community-minded individuals. It offers us all a chance to share with our community our passions, hobbies, concerns, thoughts and creations. We have created a fledgling community. I hope that you keep thinking of ways that theOwen.com can be useful to you, and that you spread the word so that others can take advantage of this incredible resource. The more people participate with and utilize theOwen.com, the more vital a resource it will become.
I would also like to send a huge thank-you to all the wonderful people I’ve met and worked with through theOwen.com. Thanks to Ryan’s family; to Jade for free massages and countless meals, and to Harper for just being the cutest three-year old in the known universe. Thanks to Doug Cleverley, the city’s events coordinator, for your continued interaction with and support of theOwen.com. Thanks to Anne Finley-Stewart for her tireless work on behalf of theOwen.com, our ecology and our city’s poor. Thanks to Tom Pink for being a progressive member of Town Council, a staunch advocate of buying locally produced organic food, a frequent commentator on the site, and for his occasional delicious chocolate goodies. Thanks to Josh Richardson for his continuous support of and interaction with the site, and for working with us in throwing our first sponsored musical event. Thanks to Rodger Flood for sending us so many beautiful photographs. Thanks to Brian Moniz for believing in this project and for using us as a promotional tool. Thanks to John and Shawna for organizing the cruise rides. Thanks to all the local music venues for sharing your bookings with us so we can post them in our Live Music Listings. Thanks to the library, the art gallery, the Grey Roots museum, and all the service clubs and charitable organizations that have sent us their press releases. Keep the news and events coming. We like being Owen Sound’s one-stop internet site for local news and events, and you have helped make that possible. Of course I can’t mention everybody that has been important to me or else this page would wrap itself around the earth twelve times so if I’ve left you off this list please forgive me and know that I have appreciated your kindness and the energy you’ve offered to our community.
This is not the end of my presence here at theOwen.com however. Consider this a merely partial goodbye. The wonderful thing about the internet is interconnectivity. You will still hear my voice and words as I contribute to the site from Victoria. In the near future look for posts on my recent trip to Kentucky with the Brian Moniz Band. Also coming down the pipe are new local musician and artist profiles and an incredibly useful rideshare board. So please, stay in touch with theOwen.com and have a safe and autumnal fall. Hopefully I will see you all at Christmas!
With deepest gratitude,
Adam Reese
Music This Weekend!
August 29, 2007
Once again our little town has an amazing weekend line-up of live music. Things get rolling at Jazzmyn’s on Thursday night with local icon Larry Jensen rolling out his sweet brand of hep-cat blues. On Thursday the Queen’s Bush Bluegrass Club will be jamming at the Legion with an admission price of $20. Thursday also offers a concert sponsored by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Salmon Spectacular. “Golden Road”, a tribute to Keith Urban, will begin at 8:30 pm in the derby tent down near the Rusty Gull restaurant.
On Friday Rob Elder will be playing at the Uptowne Piano & Jazz Bar. Rob sings soulful original material and interesting cover songs in a style influenced by Ben Harper amoung others. He is famous in this area as the winner of the 2005 Last Chance Saloon so get out there and check him out. Also on Friday evening Rebecca Morelli and company will be appearing at Jazzmyn’s as Undercurrent. This band offers great classic rock punched up a notch by Rebecca’s amazing vocals. On Friday the fishing derby entertainment will be The Geoff Stevens Band, starting at 8:30 pm.
Saturday night the fishing derby will be holding its fish fry, followed by classic rock cover-band, “Flashback” at 9 pm.
Sunday evening offers the weekly Harbour Nights Concert Series. This Sunday will feature the Dennis Ridout Band starting 7 pm at the Marine & Rail Museum along the inner harbour on 1st Ave. West.
These are all great acts so get out there and check ‘em out! And remember, theOwen.com is your place to find local live music! If you have any events or gigs you would like promoted on the site, please contact us!
