Weekend Happenings

August 10, 2007

Tools of the TradeThe most intriguing happening this weekend would have to be the Ontario Horticultural Association’s 101st Annual Convention taking place at the Bayshore Community Centre and the Inn On the Bay Best Western Hotel from Friday August 10th (today) until Sunday the 12th. The event will run from 9 am to 5pm. To take part in the lectures and symposiums costs $45. The convention is free to drop-ins who would like to see their presentation of photography & flowers. For more information visit the Ontario Horticultural Society.

Owen Sound Farmers' MarketOn Saturday morning the place to be is always the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market with all the brightly coloured fruits and veggies, the bright-eyed people selling their wares or wandering the aisles, and of course the best coffee anywhere ever. This reliable institution offers us all the chance to buy locally grown organic foodstuffs, so we should all make a point of supporting it!

Also this weekend the Tom Thomson Art Gallery will be featuring 3 exhibits. The Log Jam exhibit features the gallery’s best of Tom Thomson, the To Love & To Cherish exhibit features the watercolours of Ann MacIntosh Duff.

Toronto based, Ann MacIntosh Duff has been painting in watercolours for over sixty years. This retrospective looks at her unique wet-on-wet technique and discusses influences on her work, such as the work of David Milne. Her studies began with Peter Haworth, André Biéler and Caven Atkins in Toronto and Kingston in the 1940’s. Duff, a long-standing member of the Royal Academy of Arts, continues to exhibit regionally, nationally and internationally. A painter in watercolours, of landscapes, interiors, and still-lifes, Duff is also a fine printmaker working in wood engraving and monotype. Particular interest will be paid to her Georgian Bay cottage works that depict night and fog.~This copy provided by the Tom Thomson website.

The third exhibit featured at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery this weekend is called Home Town, and features artistic depictions of our Scenic City. Plenty of viewing to be had at the art gallery this weekend!

For the kids, the thing to do this weekend is to take a short trip over to Southampton (that is if you live in Owen Sound, a.k.a the centre of the universe!) because the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre will be exhibiting “Wild & Woolly : Mammals of the Ice Age”. Any prospective paleontologist would be giddy while checking out this exhibit.

Have a great time this weekend everybody, and remember you can check out our Events Calendar if things get boring. And of course remember that to add your event to our calendar you need only contact us!
