Tel Quel Was the Show of the Century!

August 13, 2007

Glow Poi @ the Tel Quel Show
Yes, it was a daring title for a promotional piece. The show of the century? At little ol’ Mudtown? I’m sure many of you thought I was exercising a little hyperbole but I assure you, not at all. The event was a huge success! The spectacle of colour and sound was a delight, the intimate surroundings at Mudtown warm and welcoming, and the smiles of the participants wide and happy. But I know what you’re thinking! You’re thinking, “But didn’t these guys help arrange the show? Aren’t they a little biased about the results?” Well, guess what? This time we’ve got back-up. To see what another member of the audience thought of the show, visit Bob Daniel’s Blog.

Shawna Banville Dances With Her BellyJoshua Richardson’s electronic music mesmerized with subsonic swells and entrancing beats. The projected light show morphed and flowed with the nuances of the music, the poi-spinners drew gasps of astonishment and the belly dancer took us all away into a hot dusty arabesque. The accompanying musicians fit themselves seamlessly into Joshua’s sounds with guitar work that was subtle when necessary and raucous whenever possible.

Here’s a small sample of the music that happened at the Tel Quel show! It features Joshua Richardson, Pat Dorfman and Adam Reese on vocals.

Track 1: Zion Mud

Many thanks to Kate McLaren for providing such a great space, to the Whirling Divas Vita Bowen and Lauren Jewell for their spectacular poi-spinning, and to Shawna Banville for dancing with her belly. Thanks are due to the musicians, Pat and Graham Dorfman, who added a live instrumentation that was vital to the show. Lastly theOwen.com would like to thank Joshua Richardson for his effort in making this show happen and for allowing us to be a part of the event.

Thanks to all involved in making the show of the century happen in “deepest darkest Owen Sound”. Joshua Richardson’s electronic music has a gripping depth to it which sets it apart from alot other music. I felt honoured to be a part of the show twirling with Vita. The ethereal and tranquil vibe of the music charged with a certain energizing quality set the perfect mood for getting right into the twirling. The belly dance performance was gorgeous! Each of her movements were made in the way to captivate the audience. Collaborating with Adam Reese, Patrick and Graham Dorfman blended a optimum balance of live instrumentation and electronica. “Zion mud” was a truly psychedelic moment. I heard comments that the visual projections on the wall were more enjoyable than the homecoming fireworks. One of the trippiest parts was seeing Patrick soulfully playing his guitar with fractal light patterns projected over him. Props to pat for heavy welding skills creating the kinetic sound maker of various metallic odds and ends. Thanks to Kate Mclaren for providing us with her fantabulous space, and the dishes as well as to Kelsey Carrier for helping out with the refreshments and washing of the dishes. Thanks to all who came out for the show! It was great to see familiar faces as well as new comers to the area. I’m glad to know the creative and eclectic shows are well received in Owen Sound! I look forward to creating more magic of this sort in the future.
