Rick Fines & Suzie Vinnick
Rick Fines & Suzie Vinnick

Two of the warmest, most wonderful souls I know. Rick and Suzie are the quintessential Canadian musicians - magnificent songwriting, beautiful harmonies laid over memorable melodies, all delivered with a down-home approach. Their songs invite you into the kitchen of their hearts, and there you’ll find both nourishment and pleasure. Honourary Maritimers, fer sure!~Brent Staeben, Artistic Director, Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival.

With the release of his third solo album, A Flying Leap, this “imaginative and versatile” 26 year-old virtuoso continues to “tear up the uke”. Seven of the album’s ten tracks are genre-bending originals ranging in style from the bluegrass-tinged Song for Cheri to the jazzy Fleas My Dog Has to the remarkable One Small Suite for `Ukulele, an ambitious work in three movements written for `ukulele and string quartet. Displaying a “keen interest in pushing the envelope,” James’ “broad musical horizons and crisp, clean playing” prove that “he can play just about anything in any genre” (John Berger, Honolulu Star-Bulletin). A Flying Leap is one part Earl Scruggs, one part Django Reinhardt garnished with a pinch of Don Ho and served with a side of Hendrix.~This copy is from James Hill’s web site.

    Wendell Ferguson

…into every country music fan’s life, a little fun must come !! Leave it to Wendell Ferguson to look after that special need; and he provides a full-hour of jocular levity with this amazing collection of tongue-in-cheek. The Toronto-based Ferguson has long established himself as one of Canadian country music’s most versatile performers, much-awarded for his guitar and production skills, and while he’ll never challenge the “George’s” of country music with his vocal work, he is quite capable of delivering his own material with the special flare that it calls for. ~This copy is from Wendell Ferguson’s web site.

This particular performer needs to establish more of a web presence for herself as we couldn’t locate much in the way of biographical information about her online.

    Mose Scarlett
    Mose Scarlett

Mose Scarlett is, unarguably, one of a kind. While he draws on a wide range of musical sources from the early 1900’s through the 40’s, his style defies categorization or comparison - the blend is unique. He bills his music as ‘Jazz, Blues, Ragtime and Swing’ because, as he says, “those are the four things I’ve been accused of most often”. His self-taught, original technique of fingerpicking, dubbed ’stride guitar’ by Canadian music journalists, delivers a syncopated punch and features simultaneous chords, melody and bass line, smoothly executed, without seeming effort. ~This copy is from Mose Scarlett’s web site.

On September 18, 2007, Happydance Of The Xenophobe, Christine’s new topical, political, 13-song collection, that will thrill the National Weather Service (“Here Comes Hurricane Season”), delight Julia Child devotees (“Whipped Cream”), enrapture caffeine addicts (“Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans”), but also irk Priscilla Presley, the NRA, cigarette smokers, Faux News, and best of all, Dick Cheney, will be released on Yellow Tail Records. Other song titles include: “The Most Polite City In The World,” “Happydance,” “Tom Cruise Scares Me,” “Smokers,” “Russian Michael,” “As We Stumble Along,” “Why?,” and “Reminiscing With The Gentle Lonely Elusive Boxer Of Love.” The album ends with an unexpected medley of five of my favorite folk tunes from the ‘60s and ‘70s set to a dance beat. Plus there’s a hidden surprise bonus track.~This copy is from Christine Lavin’s web site.

    The Dust Poets
    The Dust Poets

The Dust Poets are a five-piece acoustic folk group with roots deep in the Canadian prairie. Formerly called das macht Show!, the Dust Poets poke affectionate fun at themselves and the world around them while spreading their own irreverent brand of small town angst. The group has performed extensively across Canada and is well known for its powerful stage presence and genre-bending originals that frame hot solo chops and juicy harmony singing. ~This copy is from The Dust Poets‘ web site.

    Murray McLauchlan
    A Young Murray

Murray McLauchlan (born June 30, 1948) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and harmonica player. He is best known in Canada, for his Canadian smash hit “Down by the Henry Moore”, which was about a sculpture in front of Toronto’s city hall, where students met in the 60s and early 70s. McLauchlan has had success in the pop, adult contemporary, country, and folk-music fields, with songs such as the Juno Award-winning “Farmer’s Song” (1973), “Hurricane of Change” (also 1973), “Do You Dream of Being Somebody” (1975), and “Whispering Rain” (1979). ~This copy is from
