Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular!!

August 23, 2007

Salmon Spectacular Banner
The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular begins tomorrow (Friday August 24th) and as we have made perfectly clear on the site, we know nothing about derbies or fishing in general. We do know the internet however, so we can point you in the direction of some valuable online resources. The most comprehensive resource for Salmon Spectacular details is to be found through the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association website. By following this link you will find all the information you need regarding costs to enter, prizes offered, and a schedule of the many events happening between August 24th and September 2nd. Take a look at their very comprehensive site!

theOwen interviews Mike Agranoff at Summerfolk

August 23, 2007

This past weekend, while attending Summerfolk, I had an opportunity to speak with Mike Agranoff. Mike was one of many performers in town what turned out to be a stellar weekend of folk music and all round good times.

I caught Mike Saturday night in the beer tent alongside Wendell Ferguson and Paul Mills.

I quite enjoyed the set. Mike is a great story teller and his performance of “Would you like to play the Guitar” was what really caught my attention. As mentioned in the interview, the full lyrics can be be found on mikeagranoff.com

The full-length Habitat for Humanity Interview

August 23, 2007

We stopped by the Habitat for Humanity build site recently and met up with some truly inspiring people. What an amazing group of volunteers down there! From family members who had driven all the way from Fort McMurray to Global Village volunteers from the U.S.A. and Costa Rica, this is one dedicated and fun-loving group of volunteers! We took a very informative site tour guided by Neil Kemp, Chairman of the Build and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity Grey/Bruce. We recorded the tour and snapped some photographs of the volunteers in action. Below you will find two podcasts of our walking tour, the first being a shorter excerpt of the most pertinent points, the second being a longer and more in-depth account of the process of taking these buildings from concept to family home. Also below you will find a gallery of photos taken during our tour.

Track 1: Ryan and Adam Interview Neil Kemp (the sampler version, around 10 minutes)

Track 2: The complete site tour with Neil Kemp, volunteers, the homeowners and lots of saws (sorry about that!). The duration is roughly 32 minutes.

The Brian Moniz Band Heads to Kentucky!

August 22, 2007

The Brian Moniz Band
Brian Moniz came by theOwen.com headquarters this afternoon to scoop up the last of his CDs in order to take them down south. He and his bandmates are heading to Covington Kentucky this weekend for the biggest gig of their lives.
The Free Concert For Peace Poster
The Free Concert For Peace is a concert organized by Thomas Floyd and endorsed by Neil Young, featuring artists who have had songs up on Neil’s Living With War Today website. Brian’s video for his song, “Ghosts of 9-11″ spent many months in the top ten on that site. This has led to Brian and his band receiving the closing spot at a concert that is expected to draw five thousand or more. The concert in Kentucky is being promoted on CLASS-X 88.9, an American radio station that covers three states. Here’s the audio from the radio plug.

Track 1:CLASS-X 88.9 Plugs The Free Concert For Peace

Brian’s “Ghosts of 9-11″ track is becoming an anthem for the American anti-war effort. It even appeared for a time on the Washington Post’s website in a collection of music videos about America as seen by non-Americans. He is also to be found on Neil Young’s myspace site amoungst Neil’s top 8 friends!

Accompanying Brian in his trip down south will be bandmates Pete Devlin on lead guitar, Joel Morelli on lead and rhythm guitars , and Neil Towers on the drums. I will be joining them as well, though in the capacity of reporter rather than musician. I’m stoked!

We’ll be leaving on Friday August 24th at 4 pm, and I will be writing occasional updates as to how the trip is going, along with taking advantage of theOwen.com’s phone-in line [(519) 416-6936] to call in with some audio. Keep checking back with us for fresh updates on our traveling roadshow!
