That’s a wrap, another Halloween is over

November 1, 2007

Or should I say that’s a plastic wrap…

First off I have to go on record by stating that I am becoming increasingly disappointed by the commercial nature of our annual celebrations. I realize this isn’t a new phenomenon but my reaction is certainly changing. The individually plastic wrapped candies I came by last night got me thinking (and there aren’t that many around the house in the first place, I mean do I really want to try overly hard to make sure my three year old gets a pillow case full of sugar?…). I wish I had an accurate digital scale lying around so I could measure the packaging to product weight ratio.

So that was last night… and then this morning a comment was made on yesterday’s post about Ghost Loads. It addressed the plastic pollution that is aggregating in the North Pacific Gyre. This reminded me of a discussion I had while living in Toronto and covering sustainability initiatives for the Sounds Sustainable podcast.

A colleague introduced me to a filmmaker who was working on a documentary about the plastic pollution in the North Pacific. Long story short the Wikipedia entry provided a link to what I was looking for…
