aw, c’mon now, who wouldn’t want to live in a place that looked indistinguishably identical to every other nowhere across the continent?

besides, you get all those retirement-ripe boomers, who, btw, don’t NEED any jobs, and when they drive over that Collingwood hill for their very first time, you don’t want them to get all disoriented not recognizing where they are do you?

    That would be disasterous!!

What could possibly be more comforting to them, more warm and fuzzy and inviting and hospitable than a nice big Chapters/Starbucks sign on the back side of a black block, and a Costco and a Kelsey’s/Montana?

What’s that line from Apocalypse Now? “… smells like … VICTORY“?

And like, get with it man, haven’t we learned anything from science fiction? Every planet in the Star Trek Wars is one big happy giant consumer paradis– wait, no, that was Battlestar Galacti– hmmm wait … no, maybe it was the Dalek world in Dr. Who, whatever, the point is, just look at how HAPPY all those Dalek’s were … before the last one .. like .. committed suicide … out of remorse … for the astounding damage its kind had done.

Ok, ok ok, bad example. C’mon, I just know there is a Utopian Vision somewhere where everyone is happy smiling people because they can shop themselves sick, I’m certain. Bladerunner maybe? Damn, bad example again. Aw, there must be one. Somewhere. I mean, we humans, we’re those angelic creatures who dream first and then build it, and we always like to follow celebrity dream trends, right?

So where did we get this idea that box malls were ‘fun’?

I’d kinda like a Best Buy, but I don’t want them to cut down the butternut tree on my behalf. But if they DO cut it down, I’d really like a shot at some of the wood. I could make nice jewelery boxes out of it, and sell them to rich tourists in boutique stores downtown.

I wonder how many boutique stores would exist downtown in the long term if we continue to pressure the surrounding/supporting businesses downtown by attracting more shoppers to the new strip?

I’m sick and tired of people denying the citizens of Owen Sound the opportunity to move into the 21st century. When I moved here 30 years ago, people would flock to Kitchener/Waterloo, London, or Barrie to shop. There were no big box stores here then and the downtown businesses left much to be desired.
When the Heritage Place Mall was proposed, people lamented the inevitable death of the downtown.
When Wal-Mart came to town, well that would be it for sure.
The only businesses that have died downtown were the ones who’s owners spent more time whining about progress and no time trying to find ways to attract customers. Don’t even get me started on customer service. As far as I’m concerned, Owen Sound’s downtown is in better shape now than I’ve seen it in my time here.

Got something to say?
