Volunteers: Our Valued Community Resource
January 27, 2009
Are you interested in helping to shape the decisions affecting Owen Sound? If so, consider volunteering as a member on a City Board or Committee.
What ever way you look at it, volunteers are needed in various capacities… on boards such as the Owen Sound Police Services Board and the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, advisory committees such as Financial Advisory Committee, Recreation and Parks Advisory Commity to the Cultural Committee. The need for volunteers keeps growing.
There are committees that need not only people to do the work, but make decisions and promote them as well. This is the case for the Festival of Northern Lights. The Committee even has subcommittees which also require volunteers.
There are a number of Management Boards that require volunteers as well. These include the DIA, Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery and the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library.
Students need to complete their mandatory 40 volunteer hours of service before graduating from high school. There are a number of nursing homes and daycares that invite volunteers. The Owen Sound Animal Shelter is always in need of people to walk dogs, groom the animals and clean cages. Another spot here in Owen Sound is the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, usually in a custodial capacity. Being a volunteer may even include free admission to some games or events.
There is such a need for volunteers… Do you have some time you could spare? After all, it is all for the betterment of our fine City!
The City of Owen Sound has a Volunteer Brochure… check it out.
Here’s a list of the City’s 2009 Boards and Committee Vacancies.
My Sweet Patootie: Concert for Dave Maw & Leukemia Awareness
January 23, 2009
Terry Young and Sandra Swannell are My Sweet Patootie, the “li’l big band” that’s busy ripping up the pea-patch whenever they aren’t touring with award winning roots group Tanglefoot. It’s an old-fashioned shotgun wedding of cool uptown swing and rural Ontario grit! With humour-driven lyrics, finger style guitar, swing fiddle and hot vocal harmonies, this group is tighter than last year’s swimsuit!
Saturday, February 21, 2009 @ 8:00 PM $22/$20/$15
“A world of string wizardry”- Mark S. Tucker, The Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
“So much fun that you’d have to be a committed sourpuss to take any offence.” – Americana Round-Up, Leicester Bangs UK
All the fun takes place at The Roxy in Owen Sound (251 9th St. E.). Come out and enjoy the show!
