WHO WE ARE
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce (HFHGB) is a community-based, non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
The organization was founded in 1987, is a member of Habitat for Humanity Canada, and part of a worldwide network that spans 100 countries, has built over 225,000 homes, and is now building a new home every 23 minutes.
We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right. There is a role with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce for everyone committed to our vision, mission and values.
What we doHFHGB partners with families, businesses, organizations and individuals to build simple, affordable and energy efficient homes. These homes are sold at no profit, to selected families through long term, no-interest mortgages. Families must prove a need for housing, an ability to cover mortgage payments and a willingness to contribute hundreds of hours of their own labour, known as “sweat equity”, to the building of their own house or the houses of others.
By working with volunteers and community partners, Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce has placed 20 families (34 adults and 52 children) in homes throughout Grey and Bruce since the Affiliate was founded in 1987.
How we keep homes affordableHabitat builds simple, decent homes with partner families. Volunteers and families donate their labour to build houses under trained supervision. Businesses, individuals, faith groups, and others donate money, materials and other in-kind support. Habitat houses are sold at cost to partner families. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
