Go Green at Saugeen

Community Foundation Grey Bruce presents the 2009 Environmental Forum – Go Green at Saugeen – to bring together interested parties to address environmental challenges and issues in our area.

The Community Foundation has been challenged by Community Foundations of Canada to create an Environmental Endowed Fund and facilitate a local forum, the Foundation appealed to the community for ideas on what issues were most timely.

With input from individuals, organizations and business, Community Foundation Grey Bruce partnered with Bayshore Broadcasting to organize the Forum which is open to everyone to attend. The Forum has attracted interest from sponsors and noted environmental speakers. It promises to be en event not to be missed.

The Go Green at Saugeen Environmental Form is being held October 23 and 24, 2009 at the CAW Family Conference Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario.

Saturday: all day workshops in the following streams:

* Living Naturally… Preserving Our Land & Our Food
* Greening Our Homes Economically & Efficiently
* Our Precious Water
* Lessons from Nature – An Aboriginal Perspective
* The Green Act and You & Greeen Access Through Technology

Trade Show

Go Green at Saugeen Environmental Forum provides an opportunity for environmentally aware organizations to highlight their products and services. Approximately 200 people are expected to attend and the trade show booths are limited to just 20 participants.

Grey Sauble Conservation Authority’s Annual Tree Seedling Sale

On Saturday, April 25, 2009 come check out the Annual Seedling Sale at the Grey Sauble Administration Centre (map). Trees will be sold from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, for prices as little as $1! Select from a variety of trees including White Pine, Red Pine, White Spruce, Norway Spruce, Cedar, Silver Maple, European Larch, Tamarack, Black Walnut, Red and White Oak, and many more.

Composting Gathering

Join us for a composting get together on Saturday May 24th as theOwen presents Composting 101: a hands-in-the-dirt knowledge sharing family event. Interested in urban agriculture or trying to a way to divert compostables from landfill sites? Want to compost but don’t know how? Looking to meet and share with others interested in sustainability and gardening? We’ll be presenting composting tips and techniques (care to share ideas or present?), building a composter, and having a blast. You’ll find us at 925 2nd Avenue West (across from the police station) in Owen Sound at 11 o’clock am.

We are looking for contributors for this event, so if you know anything about composting, gardening, or urban agriculture, please get in touch!

It is hoped that this will be the first of a series of events dedicated to urban agriculture. If you have a thought, idea, or want to be part of this effort, we’d love to hear from you.

Composting 101

As part of theOwen’s urban gardening initiative, we bring you a selection of resources on composting for everyone from the absolute beginner to the more seasoned composter who wishes to learn more.

The Composting Council of Canada has a wealth of resources available, including articles such as an overview of what composting is, a guide to composting at home, and how to use compost.

There are many composters available for purchase at a retail level, but you can also choose from a number of designs and detailed plans to build your own.

Garden Girl’s Urban Sustainable Living has a number of urban gardening resources including the following video on composting and vermiculture.

Compost Guide, “a complete guide to composting”, details how to make compost. It also features a page of composting tips and a compost blog.HowtToCompost.org is a comprehensive composting resource. It features an overview of composting as well as a directory of general information.

There will be a composting gathering held on Saturday May 24th 2008 at 11 o’clock am!

Earth Hour in Owen Sound

I had a chance to drop by City Hall/the Owen Sound Farmers Market last night to check out the Earth Hour Festivities. For some of the details on Earth Hour you can check out our previous post here. There was a good turnout at the event and more than a couple positive messages, including conservation of energy, the idea of community(and what it really means as we move forward as a population…) and some tough words against waste (in this case waste = light pollution, unnecessary/excessive lighting that apparently accounts for over a billion dollars annually and provides little to no useful service to society.

This latter point was made by the the Bruce County Astronomical Society, whose members were on site last night sharing telescopic views of the night sky and a message of hope/support for energy conservation, especially as it contributes to dark skies. More info about the Bruce County Astronomical Society can be found on the groups website and blog (includes photos form last nights event)
