Sometimes when a celebration reaches the giddy swirling heights of bliss and thankfulness I imagine to myself that there is a meter out there somewhere that is reading and measuring our level of celebration. If such a meter exists it’s needle must have been spiking well outside of normal ranges for the week of July 27th to August 5th because we here in Owen Sound have been feeling the party vibration! What a week! I’m exhausted, and I would imagine that the keepers of the celebration meter are totally flummoxed.

After all the organizing and planning, city coordinators and volunteers must be giving a sigh of relief that all their hard work resulted in so many people having so much fun. The Meet & Greet tent was such a nice place to be, with old friends finding one another after years, young people competing in talent shows, and absolutely stellar music being performed nightly. Doug Cleverley was everywhere doing everything and yet somehow he never lost his cool. Jan Chamberlain was always full of smiles as she perused the events she was so integral in making happen. We here at theOwen.com would like to send a huge thanks out to Doug and Jan and all of the many many volunteers and city workers who made Owen Sound’s 150th anniversary Homecoming celebrations the thing of wonder that it was.

For we here at theOwen.com however there will be no resting on our laurels. We’ve got an online rideshare board in the works, upcoming provincial elections to prepare for, Summerfolk in just two weeks, and we’re promoting and participating in an evening of live electronic music being presented by Tel Quel at the Mudtown Pottery Studio on Saturday August 11th. Tickets for that show are $5 in advance (available at theOwen.com headquarters, 916 2nd Ave. East Owen Sound) or $6 at the door. We’re not rolling over now that Homecoming is over and neither should all you amazing Owen Sounders! Go ahead, take it easy this week. Catch your breath, but be ready for fun to come!

Thanks to Doug for sending this event information! If you have any events you would like promoted on theOwen.com, it’s as easy as contacting us!

Owen Sound is truly “the Sound of music” this summer as the popular Harbour Nights Concert Series continues with a rescheduled concert by country artist David Fromager on Wednesday August 8.

The last three Sunday concerts take place August 12 (Nura with Jazz combo Quartto) and 26 (Trevor MacKenzie & The Honeyhammers), and September 2 (The Dennis Ridout Band), at the back of the Marine & Rail Museum, 1165 1st Avenue West, Owen Sound. Audiences are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs for the Sunday concerts, which begin at 7 p.m.

Admission is by donation. This summer’s concert series is presented by Sun Life Financial, Leon’s Furniture, Bayshore Broadcasting, and other local business sponsors. For more information, visit the Harbour Nights Website or call Owen Sound Tourism at (519) 371-9833.

On Monday evening my girlfriend Lauren, our friend Andrew and I biked down to the Meet & Greet tent for the Beckett Family show. We had a great time at the show and when we had enough we biked along the inner harbour and then up main street to theOwen.com’s headquarters, located in the old Golden Dragon building at 916 2nd Ave. East (stop in for a visit!). At the office we set up a computer with a couple of microphones. Andrew pulled out his beauty of an acoustic guitar and we recorded four or five of his original songs live off the floor. While we were recording my boss and dear friend Ryan quietly stuck his face against the office window. After an amazing recording session we looked out on the street at our four bicycles piled haphazardly against the bike stand and as our gaze lifted from tires to handlebars we had a collective moment of sublime bike appreciation. Ryan took a photo to mark the moment and now we’re passing it along hoping to inspire you to ride your bike to work tomorrow.

This ramble reminds me of an upcoming monthly event of interest to all you raggle taggle hepcat bicycle riders with hockeycards laundry pinned to your rides to make an engine sound. If costumes, picnics in the park, funky old bikes and ecologically sustainable means of transport are your thing then you will not want to miss Owen Sound’s second in a monthly series of bike cruises. The Cruiser rides are held on the second Monday of every month with funky riders meeting at the government boat launch in the northern end of the Bayshore Community Centre back parking lot. We meet between 6:30 and 7 p.m. and the route we take varies from ride to ride. The last excursion was enormously successful. This month our ride will take place on Monday August 13th. Please join us!

With the tragic passing of Bill Georgas the city has lost a truly remarkable man. Rollerblading, skiing, and winning triathlons well into his eighties, the man was an energetic dynamo. Nearly everyone in the Scenic City has a story to tell about him rollerblading into their backyard or seeing him in the lineup in the morning at Blue Mountain ski resort, and seeing him racing in to catch the last chairlift at the end of the day. The whole city feels his loss, and theOwen.com would like to express our sympathy to Bill’s friends and family.

Ryan Wiseman caught up with mayor Ruth Lovell this afternoon and spoke with her about the loss of a long-time neighbour and friend. We have the audio from the discussion here for you to listen to.

Track 1: Mayor Ruth Lovell Discusses the Life of Bill Georgas

To commemorate the life of this dynamic individual we are requesting that folks send us their photographs of and stories about Bill Georgas. You can do that simply by contacting us, emailing photographs to photos@theowen.com, or by phoning our hotline at (519) 416-6936. We are also running a facebook group called theOwen.com on which we are inviting people to upload their photographs and stories of Bill Georgas. Thank-you for helping us commemorate the life of this wonderful man. Our deepest condolences to his friends and family, and to the city of Owen Sound which has lost a bright light of a citizen.
