The Ontario Referendum Part 2
September 17, 2007
The following audio clip is part one of a four part series of audio talks presented earlier this summer at the launch of FairVoteCanada’s Yes Campaign.
The event in Owen Sound was held in Owen Sound at the Public Library on June 20th. Unfortunately the event was held immediately following Snowbirds air show (you can check out some of the show here if you missed it) and it was a beautiful sunny day= not a great time to learn about electoral reform in the basement of the library.
So what was the event all about? By now I am sure you are aware that this October 10th, when we hit the polls to elect our local MPP, you will also be given the opportunity to vote in an Ontario referendum on Electoral reform in Ontario. The choices, of which you will the details in the following audio are to stick with the present First-Past the post electoral system (you can grab more details about FPtP from Referendum Ontario here) or to make a switch to a Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) system (another page from Referendum Ontario about MMP).
In part 2 of the series we hear from Andrew Stewart, Andrew was the Bruce-Grey Owen Sound representative at the Ontario Students Assembly for Electoral Reform.
Fair Vote Audio Part 2 (about 4 and a half minutes run time) You can listen with the flashplayer below or you may download the audio mp3 here, (right click save as)
If you have itunes and you don’t want to miss out on parts 2-4 you can subscribe to all theOwen.com audio with this link
We really think this is some important info and that more people should know about it. You can use the share this link below to email a link to this page to your friends, family co-workers …

Fortunately however we here at theOwen are big fans of time shifting important local events in case you missed them. More on this one in the future …please stay tuned.

In part 1 of the series we hear from Joyce Hall and Anita Droog. They provide some background on the referendum, MMP versus FPtP and why MMP was recommended by the Ontario Citizens’Assembly.

Time to talk election
September 10, 2007
A good deal of my morning has been election oriented and as such I though I would kick off our election coverage with some plain dry facts. For starters I took a trip over to the Elections Ontario website. I started out by looking for some details on our electoral district (Ontario is divided into 107 electoral districts).
It is highly likely that if you are a regular reader at theOwen your electoral district will be BRUCE–GREY–OWEN SOUND
A few more facts according to Elections Ontario
Population: 102,487
Consisting of:
(a) that part of the County of Bruce lying northeasterly of a line described as follows: commencing at the intersection of the easterly limit of said county with the southerly limit of the Township of Arran-Elderslie; thence westerly along the southerly limit of said township to its southwesterly corner; thence generally northerly along the westerly limit of said township and the easterly limit of the Town of Saugeen Shores to the international boundary between Canada and the United States of America; and
(b) the County of Grey, excepting the Town of Blue Mountains.
If you would like an 8.5 x 11 pdf of our district you can grab it here
Some more thoughts from the CBC
Although there is some light industry in Owen Sound, agriculture remains a major industry. The 1999 redistribution formed the new riding of Bruce-Grey by combining 45 per cent of the former Bruce riding and 80 per cent of Grey-Owen Sound.
The riding’s name has been changed twice in recent years: to Bruce-Grey prior to the 1999 election, then to Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound in 2000.
More elections information will be along shortly including candidate profiles and a discussion of the Ontario Electoral Reform Referendum which will also take place October 10th. If you are looking for more details in the meantime drop by YourBigDecision.ca
