Surfing for local stories…

Almost everybody has access to a computer and the internet… with the world at our fingertips, sometimes we find local news or a local connection in unusual spots…

For example, did you know you could find Wiarton Willie in Toronto?

Well, we did have a really long winter and spring hasn’t been with us long, left for a while and came back even! However, it’s getting closer to the time of year that hummingbirds are back for the season. You can keep track of them here.

With the sun out and all the spring bulbs starting to make their appearance as beautiful spring flowers, we can anticipate the gardening season that soon will be upon us. We can even find local gardens online, perhaps not where you expected! Check here for a local garden story.

It’s interesting that you can always find a link home whether or not you’re in the comfort of your own home or out and about somewhere in the world.

Learn the ins and outs of web publishing, get published on theOwen.com, and create content using mediums such as blogs, podcasts, and video. We are looking for 3 interns from area high schools; these interns will commit to 9 hours per week after school for one semester. Completion of an internship such as this is a valuable addition to your resume and can directly lead to future employment. You should have enthusiasm, a sense of humour, awareness, and excitement at the prospect of a challenge. Some digital media skills are an asset but not required. HICK Tech 2008

Following great success in 2007, HICK Tech returns in April 2008 for another year of enlightenment, inspiration, and networking. HICK Tech is a one-day conference in Owen Sound. In 2008 it will feature a keynote presentation by Heather Champ (Community Manager for Flickr) wrap-up session moderated by CBC personality Nora Young and twenty sessions under the topics of Business, Community, Food & Agriculture and Technology.

The event will take place, April 30, 2008 at the Bayshore community Centre in Owen Sound from 8AM-5PM.
