Composting 101

April 30, 2008

As part of theOwen’s urban gardening initiative, we bring you a selection of resources on composting for everyone from the absolute beginner to the more seasoned composter who wishes to learn more.

The Composting Council of Canada has a wealth of resources available, including articles such as an overview of what composting is, a guide to composting at home, and how to use compost.

There are many composters available for purchase at a retail level, but you can also choose from a number of designs and detailed plans to build your own.

Garden Girl’s Urban Sustainable Living has a number of urban gardening resources including the following video on composting and vermiculture.

Compost Guide, “a complete guide to composting”, details how to make compost. It also features a page of composting tips and a compost blog.HowtToCompost.org is a comprehensive composting resource. It features an overview of composting as well as a directory of general information.

There will be a composting gathering held on Saturday May 24th 2008 at 11 o’clock am!

University Project Survey Results

January 27, 2008

Welcome to the university project discussion and information site!

In November 2007, an online survey was sent to Grey-Bruce Owen Sound residents to assess the level of interest in and support for a university in the region. The response was incredibly positive and exciting.

The following four documents provide a summary of the survey results and a discussion on sustainability education. I look forward to hearing your comments and responses.

  1. Summary of Survey Findings
  2. Final Report: Sustainability Education and a University Project in GBOS
  3. Survey Comments
  4. Survey Results - graphs

To keep the momentum generated by the survey going, we have launched this page on the Owen. Here you will find:

  • A discussion forum
  • Resources (please send me relevant articles, websites, etc. to post here)
  • Reports

Of particular importance right now would be to establish some Next Steps regarding the university project. You will see that I have made a list in the Summary of Survey Findings report. Is there anything that I’ve missed that you would like to add?

Please contact me directly if you have any additional questions regarding this site and the university project at julia_ostertag@yahoo.ca.

Thank you to all survey respondents and Ryan Wiseman for hosting this site on www.theowen.com.
