Earth Hour in Owen Sound
March 30, 2008

I had a chance to drop by City Hall/the Owen Sound Farmers Market last night to check out the Earth Hour Festivities. For some of the details on Earth Hour you can check out our previous post here. There was a good turnout at the event and more than a couple positive messages, including conservation of energy, the idea of community(and what it really means as we move forward as a population…) and some tough words against waste (in this case waste = light pollution, unnecessary/excessive lighting that apparently accounts for over a billion dollars annually and provides little to no useful service to society.
This latter point was made by the the Bruce County Astronomical Society, whose members were on site last night sharing telescopic views of the night sky and a message of hope/support for energy conservation, especially as it contributes to dark skies. More info about the Bruce County Astronomical Society can be found on the groups website and blog (includes photos form last nights event)
The Corbet Foundry Demolition
August 24, 2007
Earlier in the week we covered the Corbet Foundry fire. Since that time 1st Ave West between 10th and 11th has remained closed and under police supervision. At around 4:00 this afternoon demolition began as the structure was obviously deemed unsafe and unworthy of restoration efforts.
There is likely more story to be told here but it’s late on Friday and I’m tired so the images and video will have to suffice. If Adam where here you would likely get a better story but he’s currently en route to Kentucky as an embedded reporter traveling with the Brian Moniz Band.
Look for updates on that story over the weekend.
The full-length Habitat for Humanity Interview
August 23, 2007
We stopped by the Habitat for Humanity build site recently and met up with some truly inspiring people. What an amazing group of volunteers down there! From family members who had driven all the way from Fort McMurray to Global Village volunteers from the U.S.A. and Costa Rica, this is one dedicated and fun-loving group of volunteers! We took a very informative site tour guided by Neil Kemp, Chairman of the Build and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity Grey/Bruce. We recorded the tour and snapped some photographs of the volunteers in action. Below you will find two podcasts of our walking tour, the first being a shorter excerpt of the most pertinent points, the second being a longer and more in-depth account of the process of taking these buildings from concept to family home. Also below you will find a gallery of photos taken during our tour.
Track 1: Ryan and Adam Interview Neil Kemp (the sampler version, around 10 minutes)
You can play the track below or download the show (right click, save as)
Track 2: The complete site tour with Neil Kemp, volunteers, the homeowners and lots of saws (sorry about that!). The duration is roughly 32 minutes.
