Peter Beckett Reflections
July 1, 2009
Beckett’s exhibition is a form of visual story telling. A wide range of painted images allow the curious viewer to explore their own memory or imagination as they move through the exhibition.
Working with free-Jazz musicians or painting abstractions outside while listening for the voice of the natural environment, Beckett’s free flowing collaborations bring to light the “interconnectedness of all things”.The installation is a form of story telling in which a wide range of prompts to allow the curious to make their own connections with memory or imagination as they move through the exhibition.
Opening Reception: Saturday July 4th 1- 4pm
Artist Talk: Thursday July 23, 7pm
Exhibition continues June 30th to September 7th 2009
Pat Robitaille House Concert
June 29, 2009
Pat Robitaille is coming to Owen Sound for an intimate house concert. He’ll be performing at 925 2nd Ave. W. (right across from the Police Services) on Friday, July 10 from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Who is Pat Robitaille?
For an artist at the start of a career, his hard-earned years on the road already shine through with a comfortable attitude on and off stage. This isn’t a musician by trade, this is someone who makes music because they have to. And even though any school dropout needs a back-up plan, 300,000 kilometers of touring behind the wheel of his van will hopefully secure some type of driving career for Pat if things don’t pan out.
He’s born and bred in Windsor, Ontario, the city of roses and the automotive capitol of Canada. His neighbours to the north in Detroit, Michigan paved the way for what is rock and soul music today. Pat’s brand of music doesn’t quite showcase the sound of Motown Detroit, but it’s got the soul and spirit to measure up. He doesn’t tour with a band or record with one. He prefers to keep the decisions and performances up to himself, and he’s still able to paint a landscape with a song as if a hundred people had given their advice.
Pat has opened doors, with the help of a few valued friends along the way, that people continue to knock on their whole lives. He’s had a few pats on the back from respectable artists along the way, too, including Peter Frampton, Sam Roberts, Matthew Good, The Beach Boys & Bob Rock.
Check out a show next time he’s near your city. Even if it’s a bit of a drive, chances are it is for Pat too!

Silent Film Double-Bill
June 15, 2009
The Great Lakes Musicians’ Collective presents a silent film double-bill on Saturday, July 11th, in the Downtown Bookstore with original, live scores performed by the Silent Film Ensemble. “Man with a Movie Camera” is a famed full-length ‘experimental documentary’ following the men, women, and machinery powering the pre-war Soviet Socialist People’s Republic. It provides a striking view of the communist ethos, with camera work and effects that still resonate today. The opening short “The Seashell and the Clergyman” is widely considered the first Surrealist film; taking the viewer on a bizarre journey through labyrinthine corridors replete with symbolic imagery. Admission is $10. Tickets are available from Fromager’s Music, the Bean Cellar, and the Downtown Bookstore.

COURAGEOUS-BE!

COURAGEOUS-BE!
What kind of adults do we want our children to be? When they are faced with challenges, do we want them ‘shrink away’ and give up when things get tough? Or, do we want them to rise to the challenge and stand up for what is right…even if they are standing alone? Courage is to go ahead even when you feel like giving up. This courage is needed in trying new things. Sometimes courage has to do with admitting mistakes and then doing the right thing. It is doing what needs to be done even when it is really hard and scary. Without teaching and having children experience courageous adventures, children like adults would only do what is easy. The virtue of courage is a ‘gift of character’ that we want our children to practice as they develop into responsible citizens and caring human beings.
The variety musical review, Courageous – Be!, features clips from familiar shows such as ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, ‘Is That Your Final Answer’ and ‘Class Clown’. As well, it offers the poetry of Shel Silverstein, popular music from this era and from the past, and much, much more. A portion of the set and props have been created and designed by students, and displays of student work samples blend into the set to add realism and a personal feel. Our grade 6 students are responsible for running the show from beginning to end. In this musical review, the teacher and children are at times faced with what seems as insurmountable tasks – the learning of lines, the movement on stage from level to level and place to place. They require personal bravery in the face of fear – fear that they may look foolish to their peers. The Grade 6 students at Dufferin School have immersed themselves in a variety of challenges. Some are learning to act on stage in a manner they have not experienced before. Others have dared to take a risk by placing themselves in front of their peers in a circumstance that may look or appear ‘geeky’. The easy way out would be to let fear be in charge. However, we want our children to keep trying and to stand up for what is right.
Through the visual and performing arts, we are able to express our personal vision of the world and understand the vision of others.
Charlie Brown says “You know… courage and tenacity are about the greatest values that a man can have. With the strength of his convictions a man can move mountains.” Patty says to Snoopy, “But at least you tried. Even though you failed, it always makes you feel better when you know you’ve done your best.”
Students from neighbouring schools will enjoy three morning performances.
Performances for the general public will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wed. June 10 and Thurs. June 11. Tickets are $3.00 each and are available by calling 519-376-8696 ext. 527.
All proceeds from this production will go towards the Dufferin grade 6 trip to Toronto.
NOTE TO NEWSPAPER PHOTOGRAPHERS:
Dress Rehearsal will take place on Tues. June 9 at 9:30. We would be very pleased to accommodate a photographer at that performance.
