Earth Hour 2008
March 27, 2008
While Owen Sound may not be have been explicitly included on the list of cities participating in Earth Hour 2008 I am pretty sure we are still invited to take part in the event. An hour without lights on a Saturday night? How will I pass the time?
While the video doesn’t give out all the details (you can find out a lot more details on the Canadian WWF website) I am thinking that “turn of your lights” for one hour should likely be extended to include your televisions and computers too. I haven’t yet heard of anything in particular happening around here? If anyone has or if anyone has a suggestion add a comment below or contact us with some details.

Lawrence Lessig lectures on Free Culture
February 26, 2008
The following video is both lengthy (you will likely want to watch it full screen if you can!) and of great importance to our collective future. Definitely worth the watch in my opinion as it outlines a couple of different future scenarios as to how creative works will be protected (but more importantly be freed for many to build on…).
I first stumbled across this video on www.lessig08.org/, a site which it appears was created to potentially support an attempt to be elected to American Congress. You can read the whole story on the site but in the meantime free your mind and learn a little about free culture.
Innovate or Die
February 1, 2008
It’s not just a catchy headline. “Innovate or Die” is a contest, sponsored by Specialized Bicycles and Google, “to build a pedal-powered machine that has an environmental impact. A positive one that is. I would love to tell you more about the contest and the innovative ideas it inspired but the contest website is to annoying for me to delve any further.
The Aquaduct was the winning project.
“The Aquaduct is a pedal powered vehicle that transports, filters, and stores water for the developing world. A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary”
