Habitat for Humanity is very busy with their current build project, Four Homes for Families. They can always use an extra pair of hands. Why not wander on over to Wiarton and see the progress. Perhaps you’ll stay and help.

Calling all Volunteers– Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce Needs Your Help!

Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is seeking volunteers to help us build four homes in a capacity building effort that will increase affordable housing in Wiarton.

Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is well on its way to building four homes for four families and we need your help! These homes will become the pride and joy of four new homeowners, who, with the support from many, will have received a hand-up, not a hand-out. We invite you to come build homes and help us build a brighter future for generations to come.

Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is a community-based, non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Make a commitment to us! The positive benefits and impact it has upon our partner families and their futures are truly life changing.

Our families have been selected, the ground has been broken, and the footings are up… but without more volunteer support and more community partnerships, it is going to be impossible to meet our build goals. We want you to come build with us and help us change lives forever and completely!

We currently need volunteers, lots and lots of volunteers, to help us build hope, homes and communities! Great things happen to people when you address them! Your support will enable us to make a positive difference in the lives of many! Together we will see many more lives changed for the better; who knows, the life we change may be your own!

Groundbreaking Day!

Wiarton, On. May 29, 2009. On May 14, 2009, Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce broke ground on our 2009 Habitat for Humanity Home in Wiarton. This home is part of a 2 semi-detached build, “Four Homes for Four Families,” on Watson Street and Dawson Street in Wiarton. Alan MacDonald, Director of Construction Operations, will lead the way with our many volunteers. Site preparations have begun and the work will continue until October 2009. On Saturday, October 10, 2009, hundreds of volunteer builders will gather with us for a four-house dedication to christen the new neighbourhood. We hope everyone will come out to be a part of this great celebration!

We have the honour of building a home for Dave McManus and Jody Stott and their son, Penny Cutting and her 2 sons, Sarah Gibbons and her 3 daughters, and Todd Craig and his 3 daughters and 1 son. These families currently live in cramped apartments in Wiarton or a tiny mobile home, in a trailer park, just outside Owen Sound. These families have longed for a safe and affordable home of their own with more space, and in less than six months, their dream will become a reality.

Wiarton Willie, our beloved local weather prognosticating groundhog is currently up for grabs on Ebay. Ok, so not really Wiarton Willie himself but a chance to spend a little time with him on his big day can be yours for the current bid price of $1,712. But you’ll have to act quick. With only 1 day and 8 hours to go to realize your life long dream of rubbing elbows with one Canada’s best known rodents (likely Canada’s best known “singular” rodent but his brand in this category is somewhat diminished by the sheer ubiquity of the beaver in our culture…)

Here’s what you get for a little over $1700 dollars.

Be on Stage in a white tuxedo (we supply) as a member of the Shadow Cabinet with World famous Wiarton Willie the albino prognosticating groundhog as he predicts an early spring or more winter. This pageant draws all the major television, radio and newsprint media. Enjoy the media party on Friday night, participate in the sighting on Saturday Morning. Have breakfast with the Mayor and dignitaries and be in the afternoon parade traveling down Main St. The Wiarton Willie festival is 52 years old. Have a personal, special meeting with Willie documented with photos and stay 2 nights at the award winning Gadd-About Bed and Breakfast. cheque is made out to the Town of South Bruce Peninsula (Wiarton)

***Update*** The final total is in. A chance to hang out on stage with Wiarton Willie this February 2 (plus accommodations and dinner) has been auctioned off on Ebay for C $1,712.00. Haven’t seen a summary story yet in other media. We’ll have to wait until Groundhog day perhaps to see who the lucky auction winner is.***

1. Property Decorating Contest. Residents of Georgian Bluffs, Owen Sound and Wiarton are invited to decorate their properties in the Halloween theme. Judging will take place Friday October 26, 2007 by the Landen Group. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
a) Best Halloween Display
b) Best Medieval Display
c) Best Advertisement of the Event

2. Carnival Games and Haunted House at the Arena on Friday October 26, 7pm

Saturday October 27, 2007 (Gates open at 10:00am)

1. The Heavies (Launches start at 11:00am)
(Machine Toss) will be at the farm of Rudy Johnston, Brad & Karen Robart. Come out and watch “The Big Boys” toss pumpkins with the aid of mechanical devices.

2. Small Games including a mini Trebuchet launch at the farm of Ruby Johnston, Brad & Karen Robart.

3. Pumpkin Toss at the farm of Ruby Johnston, Brad & Karen Robart. (11:00am – 2:00pm)

4. Halloween Costume Dance at the Kemble Arena at 9pm. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.
